Web GIS is HOT! Learn about it now!
Distributing geospatial data and GIS output across the Internet is the latest innovation in GIS technology. This is the area in which much of the current GIS software development is exploding. While Autodesk was perhaps the initial leader with their MapGuide product, other GIS vendors are now coming on strong. As part of our ESRI campus-wide site license, we have been able to get a copy of the beta version of ArcIMS (Internet Map Server), ESRI's newest contribution to this family.
As part of GISC's attempt to keep the Berkeley community at the head of the crowd, we have developed a new short course on "WebGIS". This 6-hour course, to be taught by Patty Frontiera and Le Wang, will provide the conceptual overview and hands-on experience needed to incorporate interactive mapping functionality into Web Sites using ArcIMS 3. The course includes a basic introduction to WebGIS architecture and different strategies to realize interactions between the server sides and client sides. Students will become familiar with the different ArcIMS components including map authoring services, interface customization, map distribution services and ArcIMS server administration.
This is not a course for beginners. Required prerequisite knowledge includes: working knowledge of ArcView or other desktop GIS; basic Web authoring skills (at least HTML); basic knowledge of network concepts; working knowledge of Internet Explorer or Netscape; and, working knowledge of Windows NT or Windows 95/98 environment.
Since we will be teaching using the beta software, and some bugs are anticipated, the first installment of this new course will be offered in a special "Beta" version on Saturday, April 22, 2000. Registration is open initially only to members of the UCB community at a reduced price of $45. Members of the outside community are welcome to register at a reduced rate of $75, but availability of seats will not be confirmed until April 17, on a first come first served basis. Internships are not available for this course although special arrangements for payment may be considered.
