New Perspectives on Ancient Connections:

Geo-spatial Technologies in the Study of Southeast Asia-China Networks

Quangnam Center for Conservation of Monuments and Heritage

Dr. Phan Thanh Bao, Director

Hoi An, Vietnam

November 17-19, 2005

This program has been made possible by a grant from the American Council of Learned Societies and the Chiang-ching Kuo Foundation.

New technologies are enabling re-examination of the past.  Through data mining, integration, and visualization; remote sensing imaging techniques; and enhanced communication systems; it is possible to supplement the work of past historians seeking to understand ancient communication and exchange networks across Asian territories and seas.

Hosted by the Quangnam Center for Conservation of Monuments and Heritage, New Perspectives on Ancient Connections brings together specialists from a range of fields, including museums, academia, informatics, GIS, and cultural heritage preservation, to organize a conference that will foreground the use of new technologies in the study of exchange dynamics within Southeast Asia and between Southeast Asia and China.

Following the conference planning sessions, a workshop on GIS for historical study will be held at the Quangnam Center for Conservation of Monuments and Heritage for their invited guests.

The following is a list of questions for your consideration.  Discussions will cover, but not be limited to, the following. Please bring your thoughts concerning additional significant issues to consider:

-            How might a conference on "new perspectives on ancient connections" be usefully framed?

-            What new research is being/has been done and what new evidence has come to light?

-            Are there new ways of conceptualizing the issue current today?

-            Are there potentially fruitful avenues of further research?

-            What have other conferences been covering, and should be keep their work in mind or not?

-            It has been suggested to focus particularly on the Zheng He voyages.   How might this shape the agenda and outcomes?

-            What should be the outcome of the conference? What might be produced that would best serve the interests of this field of study?

In addition to and in part determined by the issues above, the following questions will be addressed:

-            What should the format of the conference be?

-            Who should be invited, and in what capacities?

-            Where and when should the conference take place?

-            What are suitable venues, and their strengths and weaknesses?

-            What support is necessary to achieve the proposed conference?

-            What timeline should be proposed?
