UCB Celebrates GIS Day in the Rain

November 22, 1999

The weather failed to dampen the spirits of Berkeley GIS folk as they celebrated National GIS Day on a pouring November 19, 1999.

As part of global GIS DAY at CAL, the GIS Center in collaboration with other research units on campus ran events from 10:00-3:00 p.m.

Despite the rain, scheduled events were attended by about 70 people. The events comprised 4 presentations (speakers ), 4 hands-on workshops, 7 demonstrations (hands-on ) and a series of GIS-related videos. All in all, about 200 people passed through the 3 core venues and 4 related GIS-research facilities.

Many people were curious about the poster display outside GISC at 102 Wheeler (for details see below), and stayed behind after the Cal Band passed through the hallway, to ask what GIS was. Several of the posters were winning entries from BAAMA's Geography poster contest (http://www.baama.org/postercontest/). The posters were adjudicated by Prof. Lewis Lancaster, John Creaser, and Prof. Radke. Winners to the poster competition were given nice thick mousepads, memo blocks, and T-shirts from ESRI. "GIS DAY at Berkeley" T-shirts, GIS books and software, pens, buttons and memo blocks were also given away to GIS Day participants. The GISC is grateful for the generous support from ESRI, who donated most of our give-aways to the students and staff who took part in GIS Day activities. Thanks to AutoDesk of Pacific Meridian for their support as well. To all those who participated, whether in big or small ways, you made GIS Day at CAL what it was. Thanks!

In addition to a poster contest (see winners below), presentations and workshops were held throughout the day and all over campus (for details see GIS Day events.)

Thanks to all who participated especially the following speakers and presenters:

The GIS Day Poster Contest

GIS posters graced the walls of Wheeler Hall near the GISC office drawing attention from many passers-by. A diverse group of UCB students, faculty, and affiliates contributed 14 posters. The groups ranged from Engineering to Intergovernmental Studies to Landscape Architecture. A multi-disciplinary panel of professors chose the best posters based on four categories.

Poster Contest Winners (four categories):
