Executive Director says farewell
As many of you know, I am leaving Berkeley to take a post as Associate Professor of Geographic Information Science at the University of Redlands. I want to take one final opportunity to thank everyone I have worked with here for their enthusiasm and support during my tenure as Executive Director at the GISC.
Working with the students, faculty and staff at Berkeley has been a pleasure and I am very glad to have had the chance to experience life at one of the world's leading universities. Many great things are possible here, though it certainly does take patience. The very existence of the GISC demonstrates what is possible and the potential for it to grow into a wide-spread, collaborative enterprise reaching across campus is great. John Radke, his faculty colleagues and the staff and students of the GISC have molded a superb foundation for a campus-wide Center. Although it seems a shame to be leaving just as this foundation is in place, I do hope that my departure may motivate all of the members of the GIS community at Berkeley to take on some of the responsibility for making it work. The GISC will serve the community well only if the community takes ownership of it. If you think the GISC is doing good things, then tell others about them and participate! It's your Center -- making it work for you will take your commitment.
Through the window of the web, I will be keeping my eyes on what's going on up here. I expect to see the many programs I have put in place this past year take on new life and evolve into exciting and unexpected new areas.
I pass the GISC on to all of you. Take ownership and get involved!
Cheers,
Karen Kemp
