UCGIS Grant Deadline Extended

The UCGIS Research Committee is soliciting a new set of Research Challenges in GIScience as documented in the following Call for Nominations. This Call was originally distributed to UCGIS delegates who are responsible for submitting the 5 permitted topics from each member institution. To achieve broader participation in the process, we are distributing the Call to the UCGIS "all" list. We encourage all those interested in GIScience research issues to participate at your local institution and work with your delegates to develop the list of topics. Please note that this solicitation is to establish a completely new set of research challenges and is not a modification of the Challenges established in 1996 or the Emerging Themes in 2000. The submissions resulting from the Call will be organized by a subcommittee of the Research Committee and will be the primary focus of the 2002 Summer Assembly.

CALL FOR NOMINATION OF RESEARCH CHALLENGES
The main topic of the 2002 UCGIS Summer Assembly in Athens, Georgia, will be a re-initiation of the UCGIS national challenges for research. The intent is to develop a list of national research challenges for the period 2002-2010. These challenges are to specify fundamental GIScience research contributions that also are directly applicable to national needs. Topics may be in the realms of basic Geographic Information Science, Geographic Information Technology, or associated issues of policy, and the impacts of the software and technology on individuals and society. Each UCGIS member institution is encouraged to nominate up to five (5) research topics for inclusion in the final UCGIS research challenges list. Both full and affiliate member institutions within UCGIS may submit topics. A member institution's nominations should involve a cross-disciplinary consensus at each institution. Each institution is expected to be inclusive of all GIScience perspectives within their institution and to have resolved any disputes over nominations internally prior to submission to the research committee of UCGIS. We encourage a broad mix of GIScience researchers within each institution to meet in order to develop a consensus.

Topics, with supporting details (see below), must reach the UCGIS Research Committee by 17th May 2002, and must be made available on the Web in html format. Send URLs of links to the submissions to Robert B. McMaster(mcmaster@umn.edu), chair of the Research Challenges Subcommittee, by email. Each nomination should begin with an explicit statement of the priority in a single sentence. The maximum length of the description of each research challenge is the equivalent of 1 single-spaced page with 1 inch margins in Times 12 point type. The justification should include: a description of the challenge within the GIScience research context; a statement of the importance of this research topic to the national research situation and needs; and examples of specific, proposed research projects that fulfill the challenge. The nominations should be concise and carefully crafted to present and justify the challenge for possible inclusion in the UCGIS list. All nominations submitted will be reviewed by the Research Challenges Subcommittee, and compilation of all nominations meeting the above specifications will be disbursed to the membership prior to the annual research meeting, along with a summary of themes and trends. The nominated topics and themes will form the basis for discussions at the Summer Assembly with the approval of a final list of challenges to take place at the annual meeting of the Council.
