GIS and Urban Indicator Analysis Workshop Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Guadalajara Guadalajara, Mexico: June 21-23, 2004 Call for Participation
The University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS) and the three universities within the Metropolitan Observatory of Guadalajara (OMEGA): the Tecnológico de Monterrey Campus Guadalajara, the ITESO University and the University of Guadalajara, are hosting a hands-on workshop on integrating geographic information systems (GIS) and urban indicator analysis on June 21 -23, 2004, in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico, at the facilities of the Tecnológico de Monterrey.
This workshop is appropriate for: · University faculty members in Central America currently teaching urban planning classes at the undergraduate or graduate level · Faculty interested in incorporating GIS into education or research at their university · Faculty involved in cooperative research or education efforts with local governments.
The workshop assumes no working knowledge of GIS. It does assume a working knowledge of PC-based operating systems*. A working knowledge of written English is required.
Selected participants will receive: · Travel stipend up to a maximum of US$700 for those traveling from Central America countries outside of Mexico.** · Hotel accommodations for three nights (double occupancy). · Mid-day meals (lunch) for three days. · Simultaneous translation services during the workshop sessions.*** · Access to the ESRI Virtual Campus course Introduction to ArcView 3.x (see web link). · A copy of either ArcView 3.x or ArcView 8.x for their university (Spanish or English version). [Donation of the software will be coordinated through the local ESRI distributor. Software will be delivered after the workshop.]

**Travel Stipend The stipend consists of a check extended during the workshop by an UCGIS senior representative. The check is good for up to US$700 based on actual travel costs (receipts required), regardless of the exchange rate current at the time of the workshop. The stipend will be considered only for those participants who submitted their application before the corresponding deadline, and only those participants coming from Central American countries outside of Mexico. Any Visas required are the responsibility of the participant. The stipend will be delivered only to those participants accepted via e-mail confirmation by April 16th, 2004.
*** Except for exceptional sessions during the event, most of the workshop will be presented in English. For these sessions, all of the participants will have access to simultaneous translation services (English to Spanish). However, the participants need to feel comfortable with reading documents in English, since all of the materials will be provided in English.

The First International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology
The First International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology sponsored by the American Academy of Sciences will be held on January 23-26, 2005 at the Fairmont Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. The conference will provide a multidisciplinary platform for environmental scientists, engineers and management professionals to discuss the latest developments in environmental research and applications. WORKSHOP AIMS AND SCOPE The expanding use of mobile, spatial, and context-aware technologies, the building of coordinated spatial data infrastructures and the use of location data as the foundation for many current and future information systems has profound implications for personal information privacy. This workshop will
(1) explore diverse practices, perceptions and concerns of citizens, data developers, system developers, privacy advocates and users of spatial data and location technologies in government and private industry,
(2) explore the interconnectedness of location information and location technologies with personal privacy concerns, (3) evolve conceptual frameworks within which such links might be better understood and concerns accommodated, (4) consider the potential effects on spatial technology uses and developments of the legal options being suggested by scholars for protecting personal information privacy, and
(5) make recommendations to the broad scientific and practitioner communities as well as to policy makers on directions and actions that would best balance the interests of all parties affected by spatial technologies.
TOPICS Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, the following as they relate to location privacy:
• Models supporting autonomy of the individual in divulging location information . Models for simultaneous provision of security and privacy . Privacy in wearable computing and interpersonal awareness devices . Enabling privacy in pervasive surveillance and sensing environments . Perceptual interfaces (e.g. face recognition) and passive data collection (e.g. video) . System adaptation to changing privacy desires of users . Location anonymity techniques . Non-intrusive location tracking techniques . Market and legislative approaches for protecting location privacy

INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS Authors are invited to submit electronically an extended abstract (3000 words or less - about five pages) and a short bio (200 words or less). Selected participants will be invited to attend and present their talks at the workshop. Invited attendees will receive support for travel and accommodations. PLANNED PUBLICATIONS Proceedings: The accepted abstracts will be published in an on-line workshop proceedings. Journal Issue: Although not yet arranged, the intent is to issue a post-workshop call for full papers for a special issue of a refereed open-access journal. This will allow authors to incorporate workshop findings into their full articles and editors to develop a report reflecting the spirit of the meeting.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS Invitation by XXII ICC Local Organizing Committee Dear Friends and Colleagues, The Spanish Society for Cartography, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing has the great honour of inviting you to attend the XXII International Cartographic Conference in A Coruña (Spain) from July 9th-16th, 2005, where you will be able to enjoy technical sessions, a large commercial exhibition and an international map exhibition. The Conference is the most important event in the International Cartographic Association (ICA) calendar and it will be an important opportunity for participants to view the latest developments in cartographic and geographic information areas, as covered by the ICA. The Organizing Committee of the XXII International Cartographic Conference, A Coruña, 2005, invites abstracts for papers proposed for presentation as part of the scientific conference programme. We have chosen as our theme ?Mapping approaches into a changing world?.
