The deadline is fast approaching to enter the ACSM Map Design Competition! Entries must be received no later than December 1, 2001.
This contest, sponsored by the Cartography and Geographic Information Society (CaGIS) of ACSM and the National Geographic Society, supports professional and student achievement in map design. Participants may enter in either the Professional or Student competitions.
Winners in the Professional category will be selected for: * Best of Show, and * Best of Category: Thematic, Book/Atlas, Reference, and Series
The Student Competition is sponsored by the National Geographic Society. * This cash prize is awarded for the best student map submission The official entry form and details are available at: http://www.acsm.net/mapcontest.html.

Please be advised that the research announcement, New Investigator Program (NIP) in Earth Science (NRA-01-OES-04), is currently open for proposals; the due date is 15 January 2002. The NIP is designed to encourage integrated environment for research and education (formal and informal) for scientists and engineers at the early stage of their professional careers in Earth Science. The proposed principal investigators must be recent Ph.D. recipients (graduating on or after 1 January 1996), with either US citizenship or legal permanent residency. Careers in Cartography and Gis
The Cartography and Geographic Information Society has completed a new version of the popular guide "Careers in Cartography and GIS."The document is now both a glossy color brochure and a web site. We hope to keep the web site up to date, and periodically update the brochure for reprinting. Approximately 10,000 have been distributed so far. Copies are available for purchase in bulk at the ACSM headquarters, contact information at: www.acsm.net
