Visiting Scientist position at Météo-France

Research and development of an albedo operational algorithm for the Land SAF project

The work proposed is to join the SAF (Satellite Application Facility) programme on Land Surface Analysis implemented by EUMETSAT in order to support activities related to the development of operational algorithms for the data processing of instruments onboard Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) (scheduled to be launched in 2002) and the European Polar Spaceborne (EPS).

The person will pursuit a work devoted to the generation of SEVIRI synthetic data sets based on the use of radiative transfer codes within the vegetation canopies in taking into account the potential sources of noise (calibration, cloud and atmospheric effects, spectral conversion). An upgraded version of the SAIL code was considered so far. The SEVIRI instrument will provide a sampling of the European and African continents every 15 minutes in the visible and infrared wavebands. Further in time, AVHRR-3 embarked on EPS could scan daily the land surface provided clear sky conditions. The commitment of Météo-France at this stage is on the dissemination of two products, namely the BRDF (Bi-directional Reflectance Distribution Function) and the albedo. The prototyping will rely on the use of existing global data sets of directional signatures available at that time, either issued from polar orbital radiometers (POLDER, MODIS/MISR) and geo-stationary sensors (GOES, Meteosat). The candidate will also compare existing kernel-driven BRDF models to obtain an albedo product with a synergistic use of SEVIRI and AVHRR-3 in selecting optimally the angular data sets. The candidate will use validation sites for albedo to qualify the approach. Also, the candidate will work on the preparation of the architectural design scheme for the data processing in attempting to optimise each step in terms of computational time.

The candidate will be based at the Centre National de la Recherche Météorologique, which is located in Toulouse. The position will start in February 2002 for a year. It could be extended as a contract. The salary is 2210,5 Euros per month, social security included. It must be envisaged a few travels to Lisbon to attend the consortium meetings that are organized by the Institute of Meteorology of Portugal who is the host institute of the SAF.

Additional information can be found at www.eumetsat.de [Programmes under Development, Satellite Application Facility, SAF Under Development, Land Surface Analysis].
