Beginning GIS

(formerly: Introduction to GIS)

  • Prerequisites:Working knowledge of Windows 98, NT or 2000 
  • Hours: 6 (includes laboratory) 
  • OS/Software: WinNT/WS_ftp/ArcView 8.1 

This 6-hour course provides hands-on experience and the functional overview necessary to display, edit, perform queries,perform analysis, construct and plot a map. The course covers the basic ArcView 8.1 operations and students will become familiar with the ArcView 8.1 components such as ArcMap, ArcCatalog & ArcTools and create and print layouts including coded maps, tables and charts.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Work within the ArcView 8.1 interface and to explain elements such as data frames, tables, charts, and layouts. 
  2. Use ArcView to input and display spatial data.
  3. Symbolize spatial data and export map images. 
  4. Input and create shapefiles, tables, charts, and layouts. 
  5. Edit, calculate, query and sort data in tables. 
  6. Print and export layouts .
